Discover simple and effective skincare tips for pregnancy and breastfeeding to keep your skin healthy and glowing. Learn how hormones affect your skin, what to avoid, and how to create a practical, safe routine.
Pregnancy – magical and… not always 🌸
Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it also comes with changes. Wondering how to adjust your skincare? Here’s the short answer: keep it simple, listen to your body, and don’t overcomplicate things.
Reality check: pregnancy can either bless you with glowing skin, shiny hair, and strong nails, or… welcome melasma, hair loss, and breakable nails. I got the lottery win at first — then postpartum hit me hard with hair loss. My skin, however, stayed flawless.
And yes, hormones can also make us cry for the silliest things. I once shed tears because I didn’t get priority in the olive aisle at the supermarket. No joke.
How Hormones Affect Your Skin
- Estrogen: increases elasticity and gives you that radiant glow, but also triggers acne or pigmentation → Vitamin C and Niacinamide serums help.
- Progesterone: boosts oil production → under 2% salicylic acid is safe.
- hPL (human placental lactogen): can cause dark spots and acne → SPF (both mineral & chemical are safe).
- Relaxin: relaxes ligaments and affects collagen → stretch marks are normal; creams won’t erase them, only hydration helps.
- TSH (thyroid hormone): imbalances can cause dryness and discoloration.
What to Avoid During Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not because these ingredients are “toxic,” but because there isn’t enough data on their safety for pregnant women.
- ❌ Retinol and all retinoids (tretinoin, adapalene, retinal, retinyl palmitate).
- ❌ Hydroquinone or arbutin → switch to Niacinamide or Vitamin C.
- ❌ Aggressive treatments: chemical peels, lasers, microcurrents.
- ❌ Hot stone massages, reflexology, and pressure points.
✅ AHAs & BHAs are safe at low concentrations (<2%).
✅ Enzymes, lactic acid, Vitamin C, and niacinamide are great alternatives.
The “Less Is More” Routine
Don’t overthink it. If you’re tired, overwhelmed, or just too busy with your baby:
- Gentle cleanser.
- Hydrating serum or Vitamin C.
- SPF 30+ during the day.
- Lightweight moisturizer at night.
Truth: after my C-section, it took me a week to properly wash my face. If you manage just cleanse + SPF, it’s already a win.
7 Practical Skincare Tips for Moms
- In the shower, wash away not just dirt, but also fatigue and tears. Mix exfoliant + cleanser for a quick 2-in-1.
- Use small amounts of product → absorbs faster.
- Donate products you won’t use → less pressure, more joy.
- Golden rule: cleanse + SPF/cream, even if that’s all you do.
- Consistency beats perfection.
- Treat yourself occasionally to a pregnancy facial or massage (with proper pillow support).
- Give yourself time to recover, emotionally and physically. You’re doing amazing.
Final Notes
- Pregnancy skincare is about simplicity and safety.
- Your skin, like your body, goes through phases. Be gentle with it.
- Always consult your doctor before making product or treatment decisions.
