Basic skincare is actually easy peasy. I promise.
If you’re reading this, chances are you’re a little confused: what exactly does a daily skincare regimen look like? In what order do you apply products? Does eye cream go before or after moisturizer? Serum or treatment first? Are you doing it right—or are you just guessing and hoping for the best?
Relax. You’re in the right place.
A skincare routine simply means what you do every day to maintain your skin, treat its concerns, and protect it against external stressors. Some people like to keep it minimal, others hoard an entire shelf of products. The truth is, no matter your skin type or concern, you should always have at least a basic routine.
1. Cleanse – the foundation of every routine
Some people swear by just soap and water. If your skin looks fine and doesn’t feel tight, good for you. But I strongly recommend everyone to try a proper cleanser instead of soap.
Cleansing (or even double cleansing) is one of the most important steps—it removes debris, makeup, SPF, oils, dust, and everything that shouldn’t stay on your skin. Using the right cleanser for your skin type will make a massive difference.
2. Tone – optional, not mandatory
There’s no law saying you must use a toner. Personally, I don’t recommend it if you don’t have any routine yet. But if you love it, go for it. I prefer hydrating spray toners—they’re refreshing and soothing.
Just remember: avoid alcohol-based toners. They are harsh, outdated, and completely unnecessary even for oily skin. A good toner should hydrate and balance your pH, not strip your barrier.
3. Moisturizer AM/PM – no excuses
This one is non-negotiable. Your skin needs hydration twice a day.
Daytime → a moisturizer with SPF 30+ broad spectrum (UVA+UVB protection).
Nighttime → any lightweight moisturizer or cream that suits your skin’s needs.
Don’t stress if it doesn’t say “night cream” on the label. That’s just marketing.
4. The “extras” – serums, exfoliation, masks, eye cream
If you want to go beyond the basics, start adding:
- Serums – with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, or retinol depending on your goal.
- Exfoliation – use AHA/BHA/PHA or enzyme exfoliants (not harsh scrubs).
- Eye cream – optional, good for hydrating the delicate eye area.
- Masks – hydration, detox, or soothing masks are a great self-care ritual.
Even if you add just two of these, your routine is no longer “basic.”
Why exfoliation matters
Because it speeds up cell turnover, removes dead skin, improves absorption of your products, and makes your skin smoother and brighter. Just don’t overdo it: 2–3 times a week is more than enough.
Putting it all together
Here’s how your simple routine should look:
Morning: Cleanser → (Toner, optional) → Serum → SPF Moisturizer
Evening: Cleanser (or double cleanse) → Serum/Treatment → Moisturizer
Weekly: Gentle exfoliation + mask
Simple. Efficient. Done.
