This topic is important for me as I struggled with stress, anxiety, and depression in the past years. . I think is the problem of the century. Worse, is that we don’t feel when becomes part of our mind and thoughts. Often bringing some of us to the edge, where we either acknowledge it and fight, or we become its victim. Your questions may be: how to relieve stress and anxiety? What essential oils can you use to help you?

Anxiety is the body’s way of preparing itself to deal with a threat or future stressful events. Most of the time, we are overthinking about the future. We start to feel fear, nervousness, increased heart rate and blood pressure, irritability, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, etc.

How anxiety affected my body? I had chest pain 24/7, and I was worried about my future and my career. What if I am not good enough? I had acne, I felt tired and bored most of the time. Depression kicked in when I realized I am alone in a big city, with no friends, dealing with my own negative thoughts. I ended up seeing the worst in people.

Overall, feeling anxious in stressful situations is normal and is part of our life. It becomes a problem when you create inexistent scenarios in your mind.

Depression can also come at some specific points in our life. For example during the winter months, lack of sun or after giving birth to a child. A low mood that lasts a while, can be a sign of depression. Other symptoms: not getting any enjoyment out of life, feeling hopeless, tired, not being able to concentrate, sleeping more than usual or having insomnia, eating a lot or not at all, and even being anti-social.

Essential oils and how to relieve stress, anxiety, and depression.

Therapeutic essential oils can be very beneficial for helping to lift these negative emotions and can bring calming, uplifting feelings to our lives. One theory of how they work is that they send messages to your nervous system by stimulating the smell receptors in your nose. They also have a subtle effect on the body’s chemical and energy systems. Because of this, aromatherapy is often used as a natural remedy to relieve anxiety and stress.

Besides lavender, which is one of the most researched plant when it comes to anxiety and depression, there are so many other amazing essential oils that may help you to sustain a healthy mental state.

Cedarwood. Woody aroma that has an impressive range of benefits. Lifts the moods, grounding, and calming. Cedarwood can combat feelings of negativity. Its uplifting qualities treat nervous tension, anxiety, depression, and tiredness.

Patchouli. Soothing and healing, enhance wellbeing, patchouli has a grounding, earthy aroma. Helps depression, and it’s useful to treat exhaustion, stress and anxiety.

Ylang-Ylang. Such a floral aroma, sweet and lovely. Ylang-Ylang is so uplifting and arousing. Aids relaxation, helps to lower blood pressure and breathing rates reducing feelings of anxiety.

Vetiver. My favorite. This grounding, earthy essential oil, is so profound and deep, helps mental fatigue for those who feel stressed and panicky, and promotes emotional balance. Vetiver helps you to clear your mind.

Bergamot. An aromatherapy favorite, has a balancing effect on body and mind. Elevates low mood, acts as an antidepressant. Is well known for being soothing and calming, and great for stress and anxiety.

How to use these essential oils

A short answer is, aromatic and topic. They work fantastic only if you inhale them. Add 2-3 drops in your palms and take a few deep breaths, clear your mind, and literally think for 3-5 minutes how those molecules travel through your body. Add 4-5 drops to your diffuser. If you don’t have a diffuser, no problem! Boil some water, make sure the water has less than 60 degrees, and apply a few drops. Cover yourself with a big towel, and inhale that steam for a maximum of ten minutes.

If you are a bath person, add these oils in your epson salts, 5-10 drops of each, if you really need a good and potent bath.

Make yourself a home spray with distilled water in a glass bottle. Add 15-20 drops of your favorite essential oil or create your own blend. Apply on your pillowcase, before sleep.

Topical. Apply your essential oils with diluted coconut oil, on the chest, soles of your feet, wrists, neck, heart projection, whenever you feel you need it.

I think all the essential oils I mentioned blend well. Most of them are grounding and earthy, woody. Citruses can mix with everything. Ylang Ylang will be your undernote.

In addition to formal treatment, setting up little tasks at home could be very beneficial. You may have a morning and evening routine, or do simple things that can make you feel good. What can you do for your mental health?

Do things that you have control of like washing dishes, cleaning, or making your bed. It is important to allow yourself to feel and know that it’s not your fault. Do simple things like sorting your books or watch a movie, have a little walk around the block or the park nearby, adopt a dog or a cat. Have a spa day, or even do your nails at home, wear a hydrating face mask or do some shopping. For your wellbeing, you may introduce in your diet seeds and nutritious foods that can boost your energy, try something new like doing pilates or meditate.

What was I doing? To feel better I was always having long baths with essential oils and salts, and yeah, I was crying until I felt like I took everything out. I was cleaning a lot, going out by myself, shopping and watching all sorts of videos, going to the gym, and occasionally getting my nails done somewhere. It wasn’t easy, but things got better in time.
